Huntingtower Castle once known as Ruthven Castle or the Palace of Ruthven is located near the village of  Huntingtower just outside Perth Perthshire.

The Castle was built in stages from the 15th century . In the summer of 1582, the castle was occupied by the 4th Lord Ruthven, who was also the  Earl of Gowrie. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1565, during her honeymoon with Lord Darnley. In 1582, Mary’s son, James VI, was held here against his will by the 1st Earl of Gowrie, in a famous episode known as the Ruthven Raid. With the downfall of the 3rd Earl in 1600, in an equally bizarre episode called the ‘Gowrie Conspiracy’, the Ruthvens were disinherited and their forfeited castle was renamed Huntingtower.

Battle of the Clans North Inch Perth 

The Battle of the Clans  sometimes called the Battle of the North Inch Perth was faught in Perth in 1396. The battle was the result of a long dispute between the Chattan or MacKintosh clans and the Mackay Clans. When no agreement could be reached it was decided to settle the dispute with a battle.
On a Monday morning in late September 1396, the clans marched through the streets of Perth, armed with bows and arrows, swords, targes, knives and axes.  Barriers were erected on three sides of the Inch, in an attempt to keep spectators off the battlefield, with the Tay forming the natural fourth side to the north. The summerhouse of the Dominican Friary, which afforded those inside an excellent view of the Inch, was adapted into a grandstand for the King and his entourage.

Under the watch of King Richard 111 each side provided 30 men who faught to the death. The King signalled the end to the dispute with the Chattans the victorious. Only one member of the Mackay clan is said to have survived having escaped by swimming to safety across the River Tay.

Medieval Town of Perth in Scottish History

Medieval Perth in History
The First Medieval settlement is likely to have started in Perth towards the end of the 10th century building along the West side of the Tay which became the Watergate. This would have been along the route to the crossing of the river, now called the High Street. The development grew around St Johns Kirk, the centre of the early town and gave Perth its other name of St Johns Toun.
King David 1st made Perth a Royal Burgh in the 12th century. The location on the River Tay and being in the heart of the fertile valleys of Strathearn and Strathmore led to a boom in growth and trading of goods. Perth traded with France, Spain and the Low Countries and the Baltic Regions. These goods entered and left Perth through the harbour which was originally located adjacent to the centre of the town.
Perth was at that time controlled by a Burgh Council made up of a Provost and Baillies, which oversaw the markets and collected taxes for the King.
In the year 1210 the Merchant Guild was established by King William the Lion to regulate trade within the area. of the buildings from the medieval burgh, only St Johns Kirk survives, although it had undergone many changes. The early burgh can still be traced in the central street pal. Perth was one of the few walled towns in Scotland. Signs of this wall can still be seen in Canal street, Methven Street and Mill Street which mark out the boundries of the early burgh wall and ditch. Street names such as North Port, from the French word,  Port meaning entrance,  and Culog Vennel, vennel from the French meaning small street,  reflect the past and international links abroad with Perth. Other names such as Skinnergate and Fleshers Vennel reflect the activities carried on there of animal skinners and butchers.
Due to its central location and wealth as a leading Royal Burgh, Perth was the site of a series of parliaments during the later medieval period. The town was also occupied by both Scottish and English forces during the wars of Independence of the late 13th to 14th centuries. The occupation resulted in Perth being one of the few Scottish towns to have a defensive wall of stone built around it.

Just outside the village of Birnam on the banks of the River Tay is one of the oldest oak trees in Perthshire. The lower branches of the gnarled and ancient Birnam Oak rest on crutches and the first 3 metres of its trunk are hollow. I ventured inside the tree to film the video and felt like a Hobbit!

Old Photograph Salutation Hotel and a brief History

One of the oldest hotels in Scotland, the Salutation Hotel Perth, now owned by Strathmore Hotels Group, has been welcoming guests since 1699. It was originally a private house, to the Murray family family or Viscount Stormont of Scone. From 1699 it served as a coaching Inn until 1745. From that point it is believed to have been run by the Franciscan Order of Grey Friars.

In 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stuart on his march to invade England stayed at the hotel room 20 and met with his commanders to discuss their rebellion plans against the English.
The Hotel remained an important stoppong off point between Aberdeen and Glagow or Edinburgh for travellers. The side of the Hotel was the stopping point for horses and coaches.
The large Victorian arch facade  main entrance was designed by Robert Reid  and was connstructed in 1800
