The David Douglas memorial was dedicated to the explorer who was one of the worlds greatest plant hunters. He started as a gardener on the nearby Scone Palace Estate at the age of 11. By the age of 24 he was leading expeditions to North America. He tragically died at the age of 35, gored to death in 1834.
David Douglas introduced more than 200 new plants to Btitain including the Sitka Spruce or Douglas Fir named after him.
