At last with day six and the foundations done, Ian and David start on the blockwork. The blocks arrived early and were lifted off the lorry by mechanical lifter. Ian set up his string lines and as David mixed the mortar the first blocks were laid in the corners.

Perth cottage New Build Day Five Concrete Pour

Perth Cottage New Build Day Five Concrete Pour
This was the day that the concrete for the foundations arrived. Delivery was by a big bowser from a local Perth Company. This was then transfered into a small dumper which buzzed around the site pouring the concrete exactly where it was needed.

David drove the dumper, Ian had the wellies on directing the pour and tamping down the concrete. Steel mesh reinforcing was placed in the foundations to strengthen them. The sun was shining all day, we even had to wet the concrete to stop it drying out too quick. A small frog was about to be entombed in concrete when all work stopped to save himm. He hopped away without a thanks! Cheek!

Cottage Perth New Build Day One

Cottage Perth New Build Day One

This is day one of our project to demolish an existing old garage and shed and rebuild. The first day was clearing out years of old rubbish, including chairs, old equipment and boxes. We even had the kitchen sink! My plan is to keep a day by day diary on the blog and also a video diary.
The inside view, lots of old stuff to go.
The roof looking rusty and ready to come down

We hired a ford transit van and made about eight trips to the local recycling centre in Perth. It was a full day and we were exhausted at the end.
Next post will be the demolition.

Cluny House Perthshire
Cluny House Perthshire taken on a damp rainy day was still beautiful and the selection of plants , shrubs and trees amazing.

The garden was created by Bobby and Betty Masterton. When they arrived in the 1950s there were a few trees – conifers, beeches and oak, but more notably the two magnificent Wellingtonias you can see today. One of them is Britain’s widest conifer, with a girth of 11 metres. Although over 150 years old, these natives of North America are still youngsters as the trees can live for a thousand years.

Opening times: 10am – 6pm March to October inclusive
There is a grassed lawn and decking area suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
